Courage

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear — Franklin D. Roosevelt

I wrote this for my friends who are serving as doctors and medical frontliners for Covid-19.

For someone you’ve not met before
Using the utmost language of love — acts of service without asking for return
You put in your sweat, tears and energy
Just so you take care of them well

Fear is left aside
Forgetting that you’re not a superhero
But a human too
That you too, are vulnerable
Or was it just because you have no time to let fear be in your way
You have more lives to save
More comrades to endure hardships with
More wars to fight

But when you stop to breathe well
You can’t help but started thinking
The people that love you most
Who are servicing you without asking for any return
Are staying home worried about you
And waiting for your return
But what’s the choice?
Where are the options?
Who would it be otherwise?
You swallowed your emotions
And pushed it through
Hoping it ends soon

Take a moment
To thank yourself
For the courage
For the sacrifices
For the resilience
For the selflessness
For your professionalism
For shouldering the nation’s and people’s future
Heavy and sore, hopefully worth it.

That’s worth millions pat on your shoulder
And billions thank you to be said
We owe you more than a heartfelt gratitude
We owe you sacrifices you’ve made
And the risk you’ve endured
That we’re forever unable to pay back
You knew that
And you still chose to stay
And to fight on

So Thank You
Terima Kasih
